Lorenzo Mendez
Felipe Ortega, master potter remarked: "Once in the life of a teacher, the student becomes the master", I never thought this would happen in my case - after all I’ve been making mica pots for forty+ years. Mr. Mendez came to me and asked to study with me and I thought to myself he is so young and knows so little of life that I suggested that he go away for a year and if he was still interested in studying with me he return.
He did return exactly one year later asking to study with me. This time I gave him some clay. After he made eight pots I said to my self, this student dazzles - he is the master.
I then found out that Lorenzo Mendez grew up in Casas Grandes, Mexico the site of the famous potting tradition of refined and exquisite pottery. He comes from a long line of extraordinary potters.
