Penny Truitt
Penny Truitt's work is exclusively hand-built, using slabs of clay to form functional and semi-functional pieces that are references to containers.
Patterns embedded in the surface are unique to each piece, and the matte exterior, which emphasizes the designs, contrasts with the glossy interior. Each form is distinct in shape and design.
Truitt's clay work is a natural extension of an early career in archaeology, classical and near Eastern, when she uncovered pottery discovered in field excavations - identification and research.
A full-time studio potter, Truitt has for more than forty years been hand-building stoneware slab forms that reference the landscape and architecture. Trained in archaeology, particularly with an emphasis in Greek and Middle Eastern ceramics with training in re-assembly an curatorial work of ceramic fragments at The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Ma. Truitt has dedicated herself to the world of ceramics. She most recently has participated in residency programs in China and Mexico. For nearly 20 years she has also been active with Potters For Peace, an organization that helps women potters in the rural-north-west mountains of Nicaragua.
